Taiwan motherboard makers predict slow season ahead

Tuesday, July 6, 2010

Taiwan first-tier motherboard makers have expressed concerns that full-year shipment goals set by first-tier motherboard makers may be hard to attain.Originally expected market demand for motherboard would start picking up in the third quarter. However, as current order visibility remains weak, makers/brands are already becoming more conservative about their performance in July and August, the sources noted.

Uncertainty of the US and Europe's economic status is the main driver for the weaker-than-expected motherboard demand in the third quarter and they expect shipment volume in the third quarter will only increase 15% sequentially and is unlikely to rebound to the same level as the first quarter, as the players originally expected.

For the second half of 2010, first-tier motherboard makers and brands are currently counting on demand from back-to-school and China's National Day holiday in September and October to help boost their sales performance and are pessimistic toward demand from end-of-year holidays in the US and Europe, the sources noted.

With motherboard makers including Asustek Computer, Gigabyte Technology, Micro-Star International (MSI), ASRock, Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) all saw their shipments drop in the second quarter, combined with the potential of seeing weak sales in the second half of the year, their shipment goals for 2010 are unlikely to be achieved.
