Samsung Electronics has announced its operating profits at 4.8-5.2 trillion won (US$3.92-4.25 billion) during the April-June period, almost doubling the 2.67 trillion won it posted in the second quarter of 2009.
Consolidated sales for the second quarter are estimated at 37 trillion won, up from 34.64 trillion won in the first quarter and 32.51 trillion won a year earlier, the company said.
Samsung saw operating profits soar 643% on year to 4.41 trillion won in the quarter ended March 31, 2010, with consolidated revenues up 21%. The company attributed the performance to "significant improvements in the component businesses especially semiconductors, and strong earnings in the set businesses."
Samsung's chip division (memory and system LSI) swung to operating profits of 1.96 trillion won in the first quarter, from losses of 670 billion won in the same quarter of 2009. The unit contributed 44% to the vendor's total operating profits in the quarter.
