Rexchip runs pilot test for 40nm DDR3 Chips

Friday, August 13, 2010

Rexchip Electronics announced it has successfully completed pilot runs of Elpida Memory's 40nm 2Gb DDR3 product.

Pilot run results for Elpida's 40nm process have met expectations and 100% migration remains on schedule, the company said.

Rexchip is Elpida's production subsidiary in Taiwan, and has revealed plans to transfer all of its capacity to the 40nm node around year-end 2010.

Rexchip has installed two immersion scanners, and expects to take delivery of another three sets by the end of November, according to company president and spokesperson Stephen Chen. Through the addition of new equipment, Rexchip's capacity has ramped up to 86,000 12-inch wafers a month from the 80,000 units previously, said Chen.

Elpida's 65nm-XS process is now Rexchip's major production node, with the yield rate exceeding 90%, Chen indicated. He estimated Rexchip's bit shipment growth at 25% sequentially for the third quarter.

Rexchip currently runs a 12-inch fab at the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP). Chen noted that the company's second 12-inch fab, R2, is expected to come online in 2011. Rexchip will see its overall capacity boost to 160,000-200,000 a month, more than doubling from the current level, according to Chen.

Rexchip has budgeted NT$10-12 billion in capex for 2010. The spending will mainly be devoted to its migration to a 40nm process, Chen said.
