Cell Phone battery explosion kills man

Thursday, August 19, 2010 A man has died, apparently due to an exploding cell phone, near a village south of Jaipur, in northern India according to reports. The Minister of State for IT and communications, Sachin Pilot, has called for an inquiry into the incident, a Times of India report said.

The victim, 23 year-old Gopal Gujjar, was found along with the remains of his Nokia 1209 mobile phone and its battery. He had suffered serious injuries to his neck and right ear, according to the Times of India. There were no witnesses to the incident, the report added.

Gujjar was staying with his brothers, who own land in Bandha village and had taken cattle to graze in nearby jungle on Monday but did not return. Villagers found Gujjar's body on Tuesday (Aug. 17).

Agencies involved in the inquiry are considering whether using the cell phone in rainy or humid conditions may have contributed to the incident, the TOI report said.
