Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) is in talks with Micron Technology about taking over the operation of a 12-inch fab in Wuhan, China.If the deal is wrapped up, the wafer plant will be converted to produce NOR flash chips.
Micron has acquired Numonyx for approximately US$1.27 billion, allowing it to provide a complete product portfolio of flash memory by adding NOR, MCP and phase-change memory (PCM) products.
In addition, SMIC has decided to hand over management of an 8-inch fab in Chengdu, China to Texas Instruments (TI), the paper claimed. SMIC reportedly has been in talks with TI about the takeover for months.
Both Wuhan and Chengdu plants are owned by local governments, but managed and operated by SMIC.
