Samsung Electronics plans to ship 30 million digital cameras worldwide in 2012 to grab 20% market share for the leading position.
It believes it has an advantage based on its in-house component supply and strong channel relationships, the company said.
In 2008, Samsung surpassed Olympus and became the third-largest digital camera maker worldwide. Ind in 2009, the company shipped 17 million digital cameras, raising its global market share from 10.4% in 2008 to 12.1%, according to figures from Nikkei.
Although global digital camera shipments dropped from 138 million units in 2008 to 129 million units in 2009 because of the economic crisis, the volume is expected to recover to 131 million units in 2010, and since Samsung's mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera (MILC) is seeing strong growth, Samsung's DSLR camera shipments are expected to reach 1.48 million units. Shipments are forecast to surge to 4.49 million units in 2011, and hit 15.36 million units in 2015, Samsung noted.
Despite that Japan-based vendors currently still dominate the digital imaging market, Samsung believes it can leverage its advantages in semiconductor technologies, such as integrating APS-C size CMOS image sensors into its MILC models, to raise the quality of imaging.
