Samsung rolls out 8G DDR3 SODIMM module

Monday, September 27, 2010

Samsung Electronics has announced it already began mass production of an 8GB So-DIMM, or unbuffered DIMM (UDIMM), for notebooks and mobile workstations. The module is based on the company's 4Gb, 40nm-class DDR3 chips.

Samsung said it is shipping 1Gb x64 (8GB) configurations of the new modules. Dell, first to market with the new module, is offering it in the 17-inch Dell Precision M6500 mobile workstation that features 32GBs of Samsung 40nm-class DDR3, or four 8GB So-IMMs, Samsung indicated.

Samsung claimed that 8GB DDR3 memory consumes 53% less power than two 4GB DDR3 modules, in meeting the growing demand for lower power consumption.

Samsung expects the DRAM market to grow 51% in 2010 and increase another 60% in 2011.
