Samsung to develop Flash storage interface format

Friday, October 1, 2010

Samsung Electronics is developing  its own Universal Flash Storage (UFS) interface standard in the first half of 2011, in a move to standardize a command set required to be supported by all embedded and removable memory card interfaces.

Samsung is now working with Micron Technology, Nokia, Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics on standardization efforts for the new specification through the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association.

The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association in March 2010 revealed plans to publish its anticipated Universal Flash Storage (UFS) standard in late-2010. JEDEC UFS is being designed as a next-generation specification that will enable higher performance and greater efficiencies when flash memory is used in products such as notebooks, mobile phones, including smartphones and other consumer electronics devices
