SanDisk's integrated solid-state drive (iSSD), designed for use in mobile computing platforms such as tablet PCs and ultra-thin notebooks, is available for sampling to OEMs, according to Doreet Oren, SanDisk's Director of Product Marketing for SSD products.
Along with iNAND that targets mobile devices including smartphones, both drives will be the future mainstream choices in embedded storage solutions, Oren believes.
SanDisk recently-introduced iSSD as a transfiguration of the P4 product line. While the latter is a modular SSD designed to fit small form factor computing devices, the former is smaller in size and an ideal storage solution for embedded designs, Oren indicated.
Compared to the P4 featuring dimensions of 26.8×30×3.4mm, the new iSSD measures 16×20×1.85mm in size and weighs less than one gram, especially suitable for devices with a combination of thin, lightweight form factors and fast performance, Oren said.
For a notebook with a thickness of only 10-15.2mm, for example, inside the closed model is a 1.8-square-mm processor, an LED backlit display that is around 0.5mm thick, a keyboard measuring 4.5mm in height and a battery pack with 3mm height. A traditional hard drive, which usually comes with a thickness of up to 7mm, definitely cannot fit this ultra-thin model, Oren said. Measuring only 1.85mm in depth, SanDisk's iSSD is aimed to meet the stringent size requirements of such small and light devices, Oren indicated.
SanDisk's iNAND series is also an embedded storage solution, but targets smartphones and other mobile devices, according to Oren. Both iNAND and iSSD will penetrate in parallel into the two different fast-growing fields, Oren noted.
Introduced in August 2010, the SanDisk iSSD delivers 160MB/s sequential read and 100MB/s sequential write speeds, and offers a substantial level of design flexibility for OEMs who seek to create the next generation of tablets and ultra-thin mobile devices based on the standard SATA interface. The drive is available in capacities ranging from 4-64GB.
