Texas Instruments (TI) has announced the opening of its first wafer plant in China, an 8-inch manufacturing facility located in the Chengdu High-tech Zone.
"TI chose Chengdu as the location for our first semiconductor manufacturing site due to the visionary efforts of the Chengdu municipal government which provides the infrastructure needed to attract technology companies", said Xie Bing, chairman of TI Chengdu. "After months of research, inspections and discussions, TI reached an investment agreement to open a 200mm wafer fab that will expand TI's analog production capacity."
TI said the Chengdu plant, which it bought from Cension Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, will be capable of supporting more than US$1 billion in annual revenues. The facility also has a 134,000-square-foot fab reserved for future production capacity, TI added.
"Establishing TI's first semiconductor manufacturing in China reinforces TI's commitment to growing the China market and supporting local customers," Xie Bing continued.
This announcement follows TI manufacturing expansions in the US, Japan and Germany over the past 24 months.
