According to IT research firm Gartner, tablets are poised for massive growth with worldwide sales for 2011 pegged at 54 million units and to cross 208 million units by 2014. Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi explains, "The all-in-one nature of media tablets will result in the cannibalization of other consumer electronics devices such as e-readers, gaming devices and media players. Mini notebooks will suffer from the strongest cannibalization threat as media tablet average selling prices (ASPs) drop below $300 over the next 2 years."
According to the analysts, low-end consumer notebooks will only marginally suffer from cannibalization, with most of the damage being dealt to the netbook segment. Gartner sees very limited impact on smartphones based on open OS. The upcoming 7-inch tablets are expected to cannibalise high-end smartphones, as Gartner researchers believe that it makes little sense to own both due to their overlap in functionality.
