Altera drive TSMC into 28nm by Q4

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. is set to put its 28-nm CMOS process into production this year in response to orders for programmable logic chips from Altera Corp., according to a Taiwan Economic News report.

The report cited institutional investors in TSMC as its source and said that the roll out of 28-nm CMOS was not set to come one quarter ahead of the previous schedule.

TSMC is set to beat rivals GlobalFoundries Inc. and United Microelectronics Corp. to the 28-nm node by offering initial production in small volumes from its Fab 12 factory in Hsinchu Science Park.

In February and April of this year Altera disclosed several innovations it plans to introduce at 28-nm in its Stratix V line including partial reconfiguration, 28-Gbps transceivers hard intellectual property blocks.

It has also made clear that it intends to use a high-performance 28-nm CMOS process in contrast to Xilinx, which is emphasizing low-power at 28-nm and also counts TSMC amongst its foundries.
