Obama to encourage mentor/explorer concept in engineering

Friday, October 22, 2010 In the run-up to the inaugural USA Science & Engineering Festival, President Obama is encouraging students to keep “keep exploring” and engineers to “mentor a young person” as the nation seeks to revive its science and engineering infrastructure.

In a video released Thursday (Oct. 21) by the White House, the president emphasized that the festival aims to energize U.S. science and engineering, and he urged students, parents and teachers as well as engineers and scientists to push the frontiers of technology innovation. “It’s not just the power of science, it’s the promise of American,” the president said.

“If you’re a young person, keep exploring, keep asking questions, keep having fun. The future of this country and the advancements of the next century are in your hands,” President Obama stressed.

Among the exhibitors at the festival will be SpaceX (Hawthorne, Calif.), the commercial space company that is planning to launch into orbit and recover an unmanned Dragon spacecraft in November. The Dragon spacecraft that could eventually haul cargo and humans to the International Space Station will be on display at the SpaceX booth, the company said Thursday.

The science and engineering festival will be held on the National Mall on Oct. 23-24.
