Elpida Memory has estimated its operating profits for the quarter ended September 30, 2010 at 23.1 billion yen (US$287 million), down almost 48% from the 44.4 billion yen posted in the prior quarter. Net sales for the second quarter of its fiscal 2010 are likely to be 148.7 billion yen, dropping 15.7% on quarter.
Elpida expects to have made an 8.8 billion yen net income in the July-September quarter, which would show an about 71% decline compared to the 30.7 billion yen registered in the April-June quarter, but a return to profitability from net losses of 7.2 billion yen in the second quarter of its fiscal 2009.
Elpida attributed its estimated drops in net sales and profits for the second quarter of its fiscal 2010 to falling chip ASPs and the yen's appreciation. The company also indicated that its bit shipment growth during the quarter came in at the lower end of its guidance.
Elpida plans to announce actual results on November 4.
