First International Computer (FIC), a second-tier Taiwan-based PC and consumer electronics ODM, on November 10 debuted the Tycoon, a tablet PC based on Windows 7 Home Premium, for sale in the Taiwan market under its own brand and overseas on an ODM basis, according to the company.
Tycoon features Intel's Atom N455 processor, a 10-inch TFT-LCD multi-touch screen, 2GB DDR3 memory and a 120GB internal hard disk, Wi-Fi connection and a weight of 840g.
While the Windows 7 platform supports multi-touch functions, its user interface is still optimized for mice and keyboards, FIC pointed out. In addition, although there is a larger library of Windows 7-based applications some may not be able to be completely utilized at a tablet PC platform due to Windows 7's user interface, FIC indicated.
Therefore, the development of Tycoon entailed work adjusting Windows 7's user interface to suit a tablet PC environment which FIC performed successfully with technical assistance from Microsoft, FIC emphasized.
The adoption of Windows 7 instead of Android or other operating systems is because the former has many applications and the most business users, FIC explained.
For the Taiwan market, FIC has won an initial order for 3,000 Tycoons from 3G telecom carrier Vibo Telecom, part of the First International Group, FIC noted. In addition, FIC has had Tycoon under testing by Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone Telecommunications, two other mobile telecom carriers, to compete for adoption, FIC indicated. FIC expects to sell more than 1,000 Tycoons a month in the domestic market. For overseas markets, FIC expects to reach monthly ODM shipments of 50,000 Tycoons.
FIC used to sell self-made notebooks under its own brand Leo, and the launch of Tycoon marks its comeback to own-brand business in Taiwan.
