Sharp is scheduled to introduce 5.5-inch and 10.8-inch e-book readers adopting high-resolution TFT LCD panels on December 10, 2010 for the Japan market and priced at JPY39.800 (US$474) and JPY54.800, respectively.
The 5.5-inch Galapagos e-book reader offers 1024 by 600-pixel resolution, the same as Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Tab. The 10.8-inch HD model is 1366 by 800 in resolution, slightly superior to iPad's 9.7-inch 1024 by 768-pixel screen. In terms of weight, the Sharp products are also lighter compared with the competing Galaxy and iPad. By incorporating a TFT LCD, it seems that Sharp's products are targeting the tablet PC segment instead of competing against other more conventional e-book readers.
To enrich the content experience for its new e-book readers, Sharp introduced an online content service on November 29.
