India sets to target 20 million boardbank connections

Tuesday, December 14, 2010  A proposed National Broadband Plan would substantially increase broadband penetration in India from the current 300,000 connections.

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, India has fallen short by half of its targeted 20 million broadband connections by the year’s end. “Therefore, there is an urgent need to facilitate rapid growth of broadband,” the authority stated.

The broadband initiative is separate from India’s recent broadband spectrum auction, which enabled private companies to roll out their own broadband networks across India.

According to the government plan, a national broadband network would cost about $13.5 billion, connecting towns with a population of over 500 via an open access optical fiber network. The network would be completed by 2013.

A National Optical Fiber Agency would oversee network development, which is ultimately expected to provide 75 million broadband connections, including 60 million wireless links. The optical fiber net would provide download speeds as high as 10 megabits/sec in cities.
