Micron Technology is collaborating with memory controller IC suppliers Phison Electronics and Skymedi for its managed NAND portfolio that supports the eMMC standard for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs.
Micron has forecast that by 2014, adoption of fully-managed NAND for end-market applications will be more significant than raw NAND and other types of products. Micron is eyeing the growth potential of eMMC-interface NAND memory devices.
Phison earlier revealed plans to form a joint venture with Kingston Technology for embedded memory products such as eMMC NAND devices. The venture will focus on sales and marketing of products developed and manufactured jointly by Kingston and Phison.
Skymedi was quoted as saying in previous reports that the company has partnered with NAND flash vendors to co-develop managed-NAND solutions based on the eMMC specification for handsets and outdoor navigators. Rumors have circulated Skymedi has already cut into the supply chains of High Tech Computer (HTC), Nokia and Garmin with its solutions for eMMC devices.
