Powerchip 's December revenue down 8%

Tuesday, January 4, 2011

Powerchip Technology, a major Taiwan-based DRAM maker, has announced December revenues slid 8% sequentially to NT$3.56 billion (US$122 million). The figure also showed a substantial drop from the NT$5.515 billion posted in December 2009.

However, Powerchip's revenues for the entire 2010 amounted to NT$80.83 billion, up significantly compared to NT$31.17 billion a year earlier. Plunging DRAM prices had hit hard the company's sales performance until the fourth quarter of 2009 when monthly revenues began to rebound.

Powerchip has successfully trial-manufactured 2Gb DRAM products employing 40nm-class technology at its P3 fab, company spokesperson Eric Tan claimed, adding that volume production is expected to kick off around the second half of the first quarter. The process advancement will allow it to lower production costs, Tan said.

Powerchip is currently processing wafers using 63nm process technology, while fellow companies Nanya Technology and Inotera Memories have already ramped up production of 2Gb chips using 50nm process. The pair earlier reported on-month growth in December revenues.
