For 2011 foundry chipmaker United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) said it is planning to maintain its annual capital expenditure budget at $1.8 billion; in line with capex spending in 2010.
The budget is considerably larger than the amount UMC spent in 2009 and 2008; $550 million and $350 million respectively, but is dwarfed by the $9 billion each expected to be spent by Intel and Samsung in 2011 and the $6 billion each expected to be spent in 2011 by UMC's foundry rivals TSMC and GlobalFoundries.
