Rexchip to produce Mobile DRAM

Friday, February 25, 2011

Rexchip Electronics will start trial production of mobile DRAM products employing Elpida Memory's designs in May 2011, with sample shipments to follow shortly afterward, Elpida president and CEO Yukio Sakamoto said at a recent press conference.

In order to keep pace with rising mobile DRAM demand, capacity at subsidiary Rexchip is scheduled to come online in the third quarter, Sakamoto pointed out.

Rexchip is now capable of making 80,000-85,000 12-inch wafers a month. Its monthly capacity for mobile DRAM is projected to reach 10,000-20,000 units, and would grow further to cater to demand coming from the smartphone and tablet sectors, according to Sakamoto.

In addition, Elpida's 12-inch plant in Hiroshima, Japan, will likely reach full capacity during the third quarter, Sakamoto indicated. The in-house capacity has almost all been shifted to mobile DRAM production already, he added.

Elpida's Hiroshima fab currently has capacity to process 120,000-130,000 12-inch wafers a month. Its monthly capacity for mobile DRAM has topped 95,000 units.
