Hagiwara Sys-Com reportedly has filed for bankruptcy protection, raising speculation that the dedicated memory module sector will go through another restructuring.
A previous downturn that hit the memory industry from 2007 through 2009 already forced a number of dedicated memory module makers to give up the business. Market leader Kingston Technology, however, continued to expand its presence and distanced itself from second-ranked Adata Technology, the sources indicated.
Founded in 1971, Hagiwara originally specialized in the design and manufacture of DRAM module products. The company shifted its business focus to flash memory devices in 1995, working closely with Toshiba.
Hagiwara has been struggling amid Kingston's growing dominance and an increasingly competitive market, the sources noted. US-based Crucial and Lexar Media, which are both backed by the Micron Group, and a slew of companies from Taiwan have intensified competition in the marketplace, the sources said.
