Acer to launch 7-inch tablet PC in May

Thursday, April 14, 2011

Acer will launch a 7-inch model, Iconia Tab A100, in late April or May 2011, according to sources from component makers.

The 7-inch model adopts Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor and Google Android 3.0, and is manufactured by Compal Electronics, the sources added, but Compal declined to comment about its clients.

Although Acer already revealed a 7-inch tablet PC at a press conference in New York at the end of 2010, since the device was still not yet fully complete, the company did not allow attendees to test the machine; however, as Acer will soon launch the device, the sources expect the company to have fierce competition against Samsung's Galaxy Pad in Europe.

Through surveys, Acer internally believes that the operation of 10-inch models is different from 7-inch models, since 10-inch devices allow users to hold with both hands and control with their thumbs, while 7-inch models' small size allows the device to be held in a single hand and controlled with the other hand; therefore, Acer believes the 7-inch model will be able to attract female consumers, who find the 7-inch to be more convenient.

Although Iconia Tab A100's price still has not yet been announced, the sources pointed out that price will be lower than the A500.

With Acer's Iconic Tab and Lenovo's LePad both shipping, market watchers believe Compal's tablet PC shipments will grow from 100,000-150,000 units per month to 200,000 units after March.
