Comcast Corp's fastest Internet service, "Extreme 105," is now available to more than 40 million households in Denver and several other markets.
The service from Comcast -- Colorado's largest cable provider -- offers download speed of up to 105 megabits per second and upload speeds of up to 10 megabits per second.
Extreme 105 subscribers get equipment that enables them to turn their entire home into a WiFi hotspot.
Philadelphia-based Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA, CMCSK) is offering the service to customers of its Internet, cable-television and phone-service package in Denver as well as Boston; Chicago; Miami; Philadelphia; Portland, Ore.; San Francisco; Seattle and Washington at an introductory rate of $105 per month. As a standalone service, it will cost $199.95 a month.
Whether many residential customers today will be willing to spend that kind of money on a home Internet connection, Comcast appears to be betting on tomorrow's customer, when several members of a household are competing for their share of huge gulps of broadband at the same time.
“This speed tier ... takes them up to a whole new level,” said Comcast spokeswoman Cathy Avgiris. "With it, ... entire families using multiple devices ... can all take advantage of high-bandwidth applications simultaneously ensuring they each have a great online experience.”
Previously, Comcast’s highest Internet connection speed was Extreme 50 (mbps), which it offers at $115.95 as a standalone service. Comcast's current "blast" Xfinity Internet service offers download speeds of up to 20 mbps. ...
By comparison, the 1-gigabit-per-second service that Google will test in Kansas City, Kan., will be about 10 times faster than Extreme 105.
As an example of Extreme 105's speed, Comcast compares a 6 mbps connection to a 105 mbps connection, saying a 4 GB high-definition movie would download in 5 minutes instead of 90 minutes. Ten songs would download in 3 seconds, compared to 50 seconds.
