It's not officially E3 season until the first big rumors start swirling. And there's a big one making the rounds related to Nintendo and a potential successor to the popular Wii console.
Citing multiple, unnamed sources, Game Informer reports Nintendo will announce a new console at June's Electronic Entertainment Expo -- or even sooner -- that will support high-definition games.
According to Game Informer, it's not clear whether the HD console's visual will be comparable to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
However, also citing unnamed sources, IGN reports the new Nintendo console will be "significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360." IGN also reports the device will feature backwards compatibility, supporting all Wii titles.
Both outlets say the the console is slated to launch in 2012. IGN says Nintendo will make an official announcement this month, and reveal the device at E3.
But wait, there's more. Gaming site CVG -- citing "well-placed, international industry sources" -- claims Nintendo will introduce a new controller for the console featuring a built-in HD screen.
If this HD console does exist, this represents an interesting move for Nintendo. When they introduced the Wii name in 2006, it was billed as the console "for everyone." Since then, Nintendo's mantra for the Wii has emphasized accessibility for any person interested in video games. It seems this new device would be tailored more toward the "core" player.
Nintendo's open philosophy also vaulted them to the front of the console pack, after struggling the previous generation with its GameCube console. Since the Wii debuted in November 2006, Nintendo has sold 31 million in the U.S. and 75 million worldwide as of last fall, according to the company.
Game Hunters will be in Los Angeles for E3 in June, and will have full details on what exactly Nintendo has planned.
