Powerchip Technology has signed a new cooperation agreement with Elpida Memory for the contract production of DRAM chips. OEM production of DRAM chips will account for over 50% of Powerchip's 12-inch fab capacity.
Under the agreement, all commodity DRAM chips rolled out by Powerchip as well as 30% of DRAM parts coming out from Rexchip Electronics will be shipped to Elpida, said Powerchip.
Powerchip will also be entitled, free of charge, to use Elpida's technology for own-brand and OEM production of Mobile DRAM chips with volume production to begin at the end of the year using a 63nm process, the company added.
Powerchip will suspend sales contracts with downstream distributors and will also transfer its current clients for commodity chips, including memory module makers, to Elpida.
Powerchip's 12-inch fab has a capacity of 120,000-130,000 wafers a month, with standard DRAM chips accounting for 60,000 wafers. The number of wafer starts processed on the 45nm node has reached 30,000 a month recently, the company revealed.
