Rexchip Electronics has reported net profits of NT$1.83 billion (US$64 million), or per-share earnings of NT$0.62, for the first quarter of 2011, making it the only profitable DRAM chipmaker from Taiwan.
Rexchip generated NT$4.67 billion in cash inflow from operations in the first quarter. As of the end of the quarter, it had NT$4.55 billion in cash on hand.
In addition, Rexchip said it expects to start mass producing mobile RAM products for Elpida Memory in the second half of 2011. Rexchip will use Elpida's 38nm node technology to manufacture mobile RAM.
Rexchip said previously that its capex budget for 2011 would be mainly utilized for converting part of its capacity to 30nm-class process technology. Initially the company plans to transfer only half of its capacity to the more advanced node in 2011, and further conversion will depend on market conditions.
Rexchip converted all of its chip production to a 45nm process at the end of 2010. Its 12-inch fab has a monthly capacity of nearly 90,000 wafers.
