Samsung Electronics' flat-panel TV shipments in first-quarter 2011 reached 8.8 million units, a 5% increase compared to the same period last year, but a 31% decline from fourth-quarter 2010.
Sluggish demand in the Europe and US markets along with the earthquake in Japan oppressed growth for the TV market.
Samsung stated that although overall shipments are less than satisfactory, LED-backlit TVs still present a healthy growth in both developed and developing markets. The first-quarter growth of 420% was especially significant for developing markets compared with the same period last year. The percentage of LED-backlit TVs in Samsung's total shipments also increased from 33% in fourth-quarter 2010 to 39% in first-quarter 2011, added Samsung.
According to industry observers, vendors were optimistic about the demand growth in 2011 for the TV market and set high shipment targets at the end of 2010. However, the recent contraction of demand caused several vendors to decrease their shipment targets. According to the current shipments, there might only be 40 million units in total shipments in 2011 for Samsung.
