Unexpected opening day sales in China

Monday, May 9, 2011

GADGET HAPPY Chinese consumers and an over-zealous Apple store employee combined to produce an unexpected opening day sales scuffle.

Apple's Ipad 2 and Iphone 4 gadgets went on sale in China over the weekend and prompted the sort of queues and zombie-like consumer 'must buy' activity that we have come to expect at the fruit themed company's product launches.

However, no one expected that a bit of queue argy bargy would end up with a door being broken and a foreign - according to Chinese reports - Apple employee reacting swiftly by raining blows on peoples' heads with a metal pole.

Speaking to the Guardian newspaper, Apple spokeswoman Carolyn Wu said that the store "was closed for several hours on Saturday after a group outside the store became unruly".

She added, "The store team acted to protect themselves and our customers by closing the doors and preventing the group from entering. The safety of our customers and employees is our top priority."

Wu possibly then stopped waving a club around and stopped speaking, but according to her just one person was injured. Other reports have the 'My head hurts and I have no Ipad' tally at around four or five.
