An explosion occurred at a factory building inside Foxconn's (Hon Hai Precision Industry) production base in Chengdu City, western China, on the evening of May 20, killing two employees and injuring 16.
The production base consists of 52 production lines for the Apple iPad 2, delivering an annual output of 42 million units, and therefore the accident has evoked concern about whether supply of the iPad 2 in the second half of 2011 will be impacted, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
Foxconn spokesman Edmund Ding stressed that a fire from the explosion had been put out and the damage was limited to the building only, though there was no mention about a possible impact of iPad 2 production.
Chengdu exported 1.6 million iPad 2 units in the first four months of 2011, China-based media cited Chengdu mayor Ge Hong-lin as saying
