Acer is set to launch a tablet PC featuring the Intel Oak Trail platform and Google Android 3.0 operating system with the device already going under mass production by Compal Electronics and will start selling in July at the latest, according to sources from upstream component players.

The sources pointed out that Intel has been aggressive in persuading its downstream partners to launch tablet PCs based on the Intel/Android platform. In addition to Acer, Lenovo and Asustek Computer are set to follow suit soon.

With Intel is providing subsidies and technical support to its downstream partners, Acer has decided to add the third platform to its tablet PC business line and is hoping to attract a different consumer group than its other two platforms, as the platform will allow the new tablet PC to feature enhanced performance, but at the same price.

In addition to Acer's 10-inch Oak Trail/Android tablet PC, Acer is also evaluating the combination of Oak Trail with MeeGo.
