Samsung, Hynix lead DRAM sales

Wednesday, June 1, 2011 Samsung Electronics Co. and Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the world’s two largest makers of computer memory chips, dominated the global market for dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips in the first quarter despite decreasing demand for personal computers, a report showed yesterday.

According to the report by Taiwan-based DRAMeXchange Technology Inc., Samsung accounted for 39.8 percent, or $3.31 billion, of the global DRAM market in the January-March period.

The DRAM chips run multiple programs simultaneously on personal computers. The size of the worldwide DRAM market in the first quarter stood at $8.3 billion, down 3.7 percent from three months ago, as demand for PCs remains weak.

Hynix Semiconductor, the runner-up in the industry, claimed a 22.9 percent share in the three-month stretch, according to the DRAMeXchange report.

Samsung and Hynix claimed a combined 62.7 percent of the worldwide DRAM supply during the period, exceeding the 60 percent mark for three straight quarters.

Japan-based Elpida Memory Inc. was the third-largest DRAM supplier with $1.12 billion won in sales for a 13.5 percent market share, it said. It was followed by U.S. chipmaker Micron Technology Inc., with $950 million in sales for an 11.4 percent share.

Korean semiconductor makers retained their dominant position in the worldwide NAND flash market in the January-March period, according to the report.

NAND flash memory chips are used to store files in portable devices such as smartphones, music players, digital cameras and tablet computers.

According to the report, Samsung and Hynix accounted for a combined 48.4 percent of the first quarter global NAND flash shipments, which stood at 1.73 billion units when converted to 16-gigabit chips.
