7 injured at Intel fab

Wednesday, June 8, 2011 Intel Corp. reported that seven workers were injured in an explosion at manufacturing facilities near Phoenix, according to reports.

Four were hospitalized, one with serious injuries, according to a Bloomberg report that quoted Intel spokesperson Bill Calder as its source. The injuries varied from concussions to shrapnel wounds according to a Reuters report that quoted Chandler Fire Department Battalion Chief Brad Mille, as its source.

The explosion occurred in a support building adjacent to a wafer fab in Chandler, Ariz., at about 2:00 p.m. local time and the Fab 32 building was evacuated as a precautionary measure, the reports state. Production of chips was not affected and workers were later cleared to re-enter the wafer fab, according to reports that reference Intel's Calder.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated, according to the reports.
