IC Insights has raised its forecast for average semiconductor content per automobile to $350 in 2011, a 15% increase from the $305 average in 2010.
The market research company reported that semiconductor content per vehicle is expected to increase an average of 9% annually between 2010 and 2014, growing to $425 per vehicle at the end of the forecast period.
IC Insights noted growth drivers for the automotive semiconductor market through the forecast period including the convergence of communications and entertainment features, safety and telematics, and green initiatives.
The market research company made specific noted of safety regulations in Europe that will require tire-pressure sensors on all new cars sold there after November 1. The US instituted such a requirement in 2006. Electronic stability control systems will be required for all new cars sold in the US starting in 2012. Rear-facing cameras are also expected to soon be mandated features for cars sold in the US.
IC Insights further pointed out connectivity and onboard telematics are growing as essential selling points for new-car shoppers who want to transition content from their portable media devices to their car, home, or office.
