Global DRAM prices have touched an all time low, following a gross mismatch in demand and supply. In spot markets in Bengaluru and Chennai, bulk prices of DDR3 2GB modules prices were less than Rs 750 for unbranded memory and around Rs 850 for branded memory products. Vendors said that prices may move northwards early July, or remain constant.
“Prices have been going southwards since beginning of the year. We have no clear indication, how it will pan out in future,” said Nidhi Sethi, Sales Director, Flash Business, Kingston India.
“I feel we have seen an all-time low. The prices cannot go down any further. The demand from OEMs has been low, and there's a drive to clear inventories, by major manufacturers,” said GA Mannan, Country Head, Corsair India. “This phenomenon is usually seen when products reach end of life. Since there's no DDR4 or any alternate technology in the anvil, prices will either go up, or it may remain stagnant for a while.”
Another reason attributed has been decline in notebook market, with tablet market cannibalizing entry level notebooks, resulting further DRAM glut.
Mannan said that consumers who were planning to by 2GB RAM based systems will now buy 4GB incase the prices do not go up. “Demand for 4GB modules have shot up since the 4GB stocks are around Rs 1,700 today,” said Jagadish S, CEO, Advance Infotech, Bengaluru.
Mannan also said that this week is a safe period to start stocking memory.
