JMicron Technology have reported landing orders for USB 3.0 hard drive (HDD) controllers from Samsung Electronics, with shipments slated for August.
JMicron previously secured orders also for USB 3.0 HDD controllers from Western Digital (WD), with shipments kicking off starting June, the sources said. Fulfillment of the orders buoyed JMicron's revenues, which climbed 46.5% on month to NT$145 million (US$5 million) in June, the sources indicated.
Meanwhile, JMicron's shipments of controller chips for solid-state drives (SSD) have been expanding steadily, the sources said. Rising shipments of SSD controllers are expected to boost the company's gross margin, the sources added.
JMicron used to specialize in the design of controller chips for notebooks and motherboards, but has realized that stagnant growth in the end-markets will constrain the company's growth. Over recent years, JMicron has expanded its product mix to include controller chips for SSDs and USB 3.0 storage devices.
