AMD is set to mass produce its high-end FX series Bulldozer-based processors in August and will launch the products in September, at the soonest, with mass shipments to start in October to defend against Intel's Core i7 and i5 series processors, according to sources from motherboard players.
The sources pointed out that AMD will launch eight-core, six-core and quad-core versions of FX series Bulldozer-based processors including eight-core FX-8150 (125W) and FX-8100 (95W); six-core FX-6100 (95W) and quad-core FX-4100 (95W) initially.
In the first quarter of 2012, AMD is set to launch more FX series CPUs – eight-core FX-8170 and FX-8120; six-core FX-6120; and quad-core FX-4120, while the company is set to launch the triple-core FX-3150 for the OEM market, the sources noted.
The sources pointed out that the new FX series processors will gradually replace AMD's existing Phenom II AM3 processors with FX series' proportion to account for 20% of AMD's total desktop CPU shipments in the first quarter of 2012.
The sources also cited figures from research firm Mercury Research and pointed out that AMD's share in the x86 processor market increased from 17.8% in the second quarter of 2010 to 19.4% in the same quarter of 2011 with Intel dropping from 81.3% to 79.9%.
