SIS to phase out chipset business

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Silicon Integrated System (SiS) is set to phase out its PC business by the end of 2011 and will turn its business focus fully to chipsets for consumer electronics in the future, and SiS will completely stop shipping PC chipsets after its existing orders are completed.

SiS and VIA Technologies both had strong performances in the PC chipset industry before 2000, but after 2000, SiS' operating started facing crisis with United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) taking over SiS in early 2003 as a result of the patent lawsuit between the two firms. In 2006, SiS announced it would break into the DRAM module market, but was significantly damaged by low DRAM prices in 2007 and the DRAM department was later spun out from SiS in 2008. Since then, the company has been focusing and trying to cut into the consumer electronic chipset business.

Due to SiS not having planned for a new PC chipsets in the past year, market watchers have been rumoring that SiS has already phased out its PC chipset business; however, although SiS has been refuting these rumors, the company has recently started to acquire some achievements in the consumer electronic chipset industry, and it has firmed up its future plans.

The company will continue to ship Xbox 360 gaming chipsets and will announce new chipset solutions for smart TV, touchscreen and multimedia set-top-box applications. The company's Smart TV SoC has already received orders from players such as TCL, Tatung and TPV, while its HDTV chipsets also received orders from Chimei Innolux and BenQ.

SiS' touchscreen SoC also had successfully cut into China's white-box tablet PC market with its shipment volume having a chance to grow from a previously forecasted 50,000 units every month to more than 100,000 units.
