ProMos to quit DRAM business

Monday, August 29, 2011

ProMOS Technologies to quit from PC DRAM with an aim of gradually phasing out the business, according to company chairman ML Chen.

Following an upcoming restructuring of company capital, ProMOS will move to focus on the manufacture of niche-market memory including specialty DRAM and mobile RAM, said Chen.

ProMOS has completed development of 1Gb DDR and DDR2 products built using Elpida Memory's process technology. The devices will be in sampling at the end of September, Chen indicated.

Meanwhile, ProMOS has developed 1Gb mobile RAM, also using technology licensed from Elpida, Chen disclosed. In late 2010, ProMOS struck a deal to use Elpida's stack designs for its own-brand DRAM targeting niche markets.

ProMOS in June announced that it had completed a joint technology development project with Silterra Malaysia, bringing Silterra's 0.13- and 0.11-micron HV process technology for small-panel LCD driver IC applications to its 12-inch plant at the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP). The technology is on track for mass production starting the fourth quarter of 2011, ProMOS revealed previously.
