Via joins rank to sue Apple for infringement

Friday, September 23, 2011 Taiwan x86 chip maker Via Technologies, Inc. is suing Apple Inc. for infringing three U.S. processor patents.

Via filed a complaint with the U. S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and a suit in the U.S. District Court of Delaware. The suits allege infringement in Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod and Apple TV product lines and associated software.

"Via has built up an extensive IP portfolio consisting of over 5,000 patents as a result of significant investments in world class technology research and development," said Wenchi Chen, chief executive of Via.

The patents at issue are No. 6253312 for a method and apparatus for double operand load and Nos. 6253311 and 6754810 for an instruction set for bi-directional conversion and transfer of integer and floating point data.

The latest action comes at a time when Apple, Microsoft and Oracle are waging patent infringement battles against leading members of the Android camp including Google, Samsung and HTC. Chen of Via is the husband of Cher Wang the chairman of both Via and HTC.
