Intel to unveil more ultrabook promotions in October

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Intel is set to unveil new promotion plans for ultrabooks on October 4 hoping to boost morale among its partners, according to sources from notebook players.

Since Intel is unwilling to drop its ultrabook CPU prices because of concerns over impacts on its gross margins and its overall ASPs for new CPUs in the future, the company has decided to increase its marketing subsidies to notebook vendors to attract them into promoting the new devices, the sources noted.

However, since ultrabooks launched before the end of 2011 still cannot outmatch Apple's MacBook Air in terms of brand popularity and price/performance ratio, ultrabooks are unlikely to become mainstream models in the notebook market until the Ivy Bridge platform appears in April 2012, when related component costs will drop, helping prices to reach the US$699-999 range.
