Intel/Samsung co-develop Tizen platform gearing for tablet PCs

Friday, September 30, 2011

The New Intel 's Tizen platform, a new mobile device operating system co-developed by Intel and Samsung Electronics for smartphones and tablet PCs, will have potential to be adopted by tablet PC makers.

Intel has teamed up with Samsung and the Linux Foundation to jointly develop the Tizen OS, since Nokia has decided to back off from the MeeGo platform it co-developed with Intel to instead focus its development on Windows Phone.

MeeGo OS will be incorporated into Tizen, and Intel will continue to solicit new partners to join the Tizen club, said the sources, adding that Asustek Computer and Acer are both set to add development for the project, while HTC is currently evaluating its decision.

Although Tizen is designed to support multiple device categories, such as smartphones, tablet PCs, smart TVs, netbooks, and in-vehicle infotainment devices, sources in the handset industry pointed out that most smartphone vendors currently still prefer ARM-based architectures to Intel's x86, and therefore, it will be more difficult for smartphone vendors to develop new solutions based on Tizen.

However, Tizen has promise in the table PC and netbook segments as Intel still boasts advantages in the large-size mobile device segment, and the integration and optimization of Tizen with hardware architectures will make the OS attractive enough for hardware vendors, the sources asserted.

Samsung will play an important role for the success of Tizen due to its status as one of the top vendors of smartphones and tablet PCs globally. Tizen will easily capture market share if Samsung shifts a certain portion of its products to the Tizen OS, said the sources. But it is impossible for Samsung to switch from Android to Tizen in the near term. In addition, Samsung has to take care of its own Bada OS as well as Windows 8 and Windows Phone.
