ProMOS buy 8-inch fab in China

Monday, October 3, 2011

ProMOS Technologies has announced that the company completed its sale of an 8-inch wafer fab in Chongqing, China for US$15.7 million.

The 8-inch wafer plant in China was sold to AVIC Systems, a subsidiary of state-owned enterprise Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), according to ProMOS.

ProMOS said it has recognized an investment gain of NT$552 million (US$18 million) for the sale of the China fab operation.

ProMOS revealed that the China operation suffered its third straight loss in 2010. The company cumulatively invested about US$132 million in the unit, which originally specialized in the manufacture of power management ICs.

ProMOS previously sold one of its 12-inch wafer fabs to Macronix International, a supplier of mask ROM and NOR flash memories, for a total of NT$8.5 billion. The recognized gain was about NT$2.6 billion.

ProMOS now runs only one fab with monthly capacity of about 60,000 12-inch wafers. The company has moved to shift its business focus away from PC DRAM while placing emphasis on the manufacture of niche-market memory including specialty DRAM and mobile RAM, and LCD driver ICs, on an OEM basis.
