DRAMexchange predicts Flash volume to increase

Wednesday, October 26, 2011 Production value of NAND flash chips will increase by 20 percent next year due to strong demand, predicted market research firm DRAMeXchange yesterday.
Production value will grow even when average sales prices are expected to drop 30 percent, it said.

NAND flash chips are memory chips that are able to hold data even when the power of the device is off. In this regard NAND flash is different from dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, which can hold data only when the power of the device is on.

According to DRAMeXchange, smart phones and tablet devices will be the main growth driver for NAND flash, which serves as the basis for memory cards inserted into these devices. Next year, shipments of smart phones may reach 600 million units, up 40 percent from this year, the firm said.

Tablets, meanwhile, are expected to ship out 70 million, it said.

Meanwhile, the lightweight and thin Ultrabook computers are expected to see penetration rate reaching 10 percent, and this will increase demands for solid state drives (SSDs), which are another NAND flash application, DRAMeXchange said.

SSDs for server applications are also expected to see demands rise due to the popularity of cloud computing, it said.

Against this backdrop, demand for NAND flash is expected to grow 68 percent in 2012, and this will result in an increase of production value to US$26 billion, a rise of 20 percent from this year, DRAMeXchange said.
