Tablets top 2011 shopping list

Monday, November 28, 2011
As Black Friday approaches in the U.S. studies have found that tablets top consumer wishlists this holiday weekend.
A CEA survey of American consumers has revealed 14 percent of shoppers would like to receive a tablet for Christmas, while 11 percent would like a laptop. In a similar study, market research and consumer electronics review firm Retrevo found tablets topping shoppers’ lists too, with HDTV sets, laptops and smartphones also popular choices.
“Although we don’t expect to see too many doorbuster deals on iPads or even other tablets, it’s at the top of the bargain hunter’s list this year,” noted Retrovo adding that Apple iPads and Amazon Kindle Fires were the most coveted models on consumer wishlists.
Despite the difficult economy, the CEA reported that 76 percent of consumers were still planning to buy pricey technology gifts over the holiday season, with the organization predicting an average anticipated tech spend of up to $246 per person, compared to $194 in 2007.
"Even though these are tough economic times, consumer electronics is more than holding its own," said president and CEO of the CEA, Gary Shapiro. "We'll see global retail revenue of $960 billion this year, and we'll go over the trillion mark in 2012."
Interestingly, Retrevo, which polled 1000 individuals of mixed gender, race and income, living in the United States, noted that women were slightly more likely to want an iPad, while men preferred to plump for a Kindle Fire. Women were also reported to be less interested in 3DTV sets and more interested in digital cameras, which remain highly placed on gadget lists despite the rise of better phone cameras this year.
Under 25s were found to be more keen to buy or receive a laptop than a tablet, with Apple’s MacBook Air the purported consumer favorite of the season. Other popular items for the under 25 age group included an iPhone 4S and a digital camera.
Middle aged adults between the ages of 45-55 were apparently more interested in new HDTVs as well as 3DTVs.
Socio-economically, Retrevo found laptops to be high on the list for low income consumers, as well as the iPad, popular with bow low-income and upper-income buyers. Interestingly, the Amazon Kindle Fire was more popular among the very high income group than the iPad.
Online shopping for bargains is also on the rise according to Retrevo, despite some big box retailers admitting their best deals were being saved for brick-and-mortar stores.
