Elpida Memory and Toshiba are in talks to integrate business operations, with the Japan government playing a key role in making it happen.
The Japan government intends to push some form of integration between Elpida and Toshiba - with the former being the country's sole DRAM maker and the latter a major supplier of flash memory chips, according to industry sources. The aim is to integrate both sides' DRAM, flash and logic IC technology and assets, and keep the country from being marginalized as the Korea semiconductor industry expands its global presence.
The government also considers Japan should keep its home-grown DRAM technology and assets, despite the shrinking market, industry sources indicated.
Toshiba could leverage Elpida's mobile RAM technology and assets to accelerate and optimize the development of its flash memory products used in mobile devices, as well as helping it better compete Korea- and US-based rivals, the sources commented. However, Toshiba would not attempt to return to the DRAM market through integration with Elpida, the sources believe.
