Samsung Electronics on March 1 unveiled two Series 5 ultra-books equipped with Intel Core i5 processors for launch in the Taiwan market at recommended retail prices of NT$30,900 (US$1,047) for a 13.3-inch model and NT$32,900 for a 14-inch model.
Samsung's notebooks are all adopting slim bezel designs to narrow down panel frame sizes, allowing the company's notebooks to feature a smaller overall size than that of competitors' notebooks with the same panel size. Samsung Series 7's 14-inch notebooks only has a panel frame of 6mm and has successfully shrunk down the notebook's overall size by 1-inch. Such a design will become the main selling point of its future products, Samsung Taiwan noted.
Currently, Taiwan's notebook market is dominated by Acer and Asustek Computer with the two together accounting for 70% of the market, while Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard (HP) together have about 15-20%; therefore, Samsung might have difficulty to change the existing market status; however, the situation in Korea is opposite as Samsung has over 50% market share in the notebook market, LG about 20%, and the remaining shared by non-Korean vendors.
As for Samsung's notebooks being priced above NT$30,000, higher than Taiwan's mainstream price range of NT$25,000, Samsung Taiwan stressed that the company will not start a low price strategy and will instead push features and quality, then adjust pricing and product lines based on sales. In addition to retail channels, Samsung is also cooperating with telecom carriers in Taiwan to push bundle plans.
