Sony will launch a total of four LCD TV series and 11 models in Taiwan in 2012, according to Sony Taiwan. On April 9, the HX750 and HX75A series will be introduced with high-end HX850 and low-endEX650 series released at a later date.
Sony said that it wants to hold its top-rank title in terms of sales value in Taiwan and is optimistic that demand TVs will increase from April-June.
Sources in the LCD TV industry said they are optimistic that Taiwan's switch to digital broadcast in July will bring 5-10% sales growth to the domestic TV market in 2012.
The size of the LCD TV market in Taiwan is about one million units with an annual growth estimated at around 10%. Sony said that LCD TVs are popular in Taiwan and according to statistics, the company has about 16% of the 3D TV segment, 39% of Internet TV, and about 53% of LED TV.
However, the new models that will be launched by Sony in Taiwan are all LED edge-lit LCD TVs, which will face competition from Samsung and other brands that offer low-price backlit models that are about 10% cheaper than ordinary LED TVs. Compeition is also coming from other Japanese and Taiwanese brands that are promoting CCFLs in their upcoming series.
The top three foreign LCD TV brands in Taiwan are LG, Samsung Electronics, and Sony, with Taiwan's main brands being Chimei, BenQ, and Teco. Chimei hopes to sell 180,000 units in 2012, with BenQ and Teco estimated to ship 100,000 units each.
