Sony is increasing the proportion of connected TVs in its LCD TV shipments, with aims to take a 60% share of the segment worldwide in 2012.
The vendor will also increase the proportionof backlit-TV models to 70% in 2012 from the previous 40%.
Sony said that in 2012 it hopes to see its LCD TV business return to profitablity. Sony also said that in 2012 its focus will not be only on unit sales, but also on enhancing high-end LCD TVs' overall added value, such as high-definition picture quality and Internet connectivity.
In 2012 Sony's Internet TV will be incorporated into Sony's own platform, Sony Entertainment Network (SEN), which offers apps, audio-video content and localized TV channels, according to the vendor. SEN also has already been integrated with the company's gaming platform, PlayStation Network (PSN).
Sony's new LCD TV products are also trying to incorporate social networking sites. This will allow users to watch programs while using sites like Facebook. Users can download a media remote application to their mobile devices and can operate their LCD TV via a DLNA network or connect device-to-device with Wi-Fi Direct.
