Nokia has been working hard to build its Lumia brand of Windows Phone smartphones this year, with important launches in both North America and Europe. Unfortunately for the company, it doesn't seem like European carriers are all that impressed with the Lumia line of smartphones, and those carriers claim that the phones can't compete with the iOS and Android smartphones already dominating the market.
Reuters is reporting that four major European carriers claim that the new Nokia phones aren't good enough to compete with the incumbents. Citing concerns with high cost and the Windows Phone platform itself, the unnamed carriers say that not many people come in to their stores looking for Lumia smartphones. One carrier even went so far as to say that "If the Lumia with the same hardware came with Android in it and not Windows, it would be much easier to sell."
Nokia does have a strong partner in the U.S., however, as AT&T has committed to putting its weight behind the new Nokia Lumia 900 and future Nokia smartphones. The Lumia 900 has been the focus of the largest marketing campaign ever attempted by the carrier, with AT&T even claiming that the smartphone's launch is bigger than the original Apple iPhone's back in 2007. Time will tell if that pays off, and whether Nokia can recapture the mind share it once had among mobile phone customers.
It just might be a bit harder for the company in Europe than it initially anticipated.
